Proteases
The main function of proteases in the body is to break down proteins. In this reaction, they hydrolyze the peptide bonds between the amino acids that make up the protein. This reaction is of great importance for a number of relatively unrelated processes in organisms that it is able to influence. The most important functions include participation in inflammation, catabolism (breakdown of old proteins) and apoptosis (programmed cell death), i.e. in mechanisms serving to eliminate unnecessary or damaged cells. Proteases control coagulation (clotting), some neurophysiological processes, digestion of protein food, but also the union of sperm with the egg.

Occurrence of proteases: Proteases are ubiquitous, as they are found in all tissues and cells of all organisms. They are distinguished by the site of action into intracellular and extracellular. Intracellular proteases perform a wide range of tasks in cells and thus regulate the protein content in the cell. If proteins are no longer needed or are damaged, they are broken down by proteases in lysosomes. Extracellularly secreted proteases are mainly found in the digestive tract, where they catalyze the hydrolytic breakdown of food. However, they are also found in other extracellular fluids, where they perform highly specific tasks, such as proteases of the blood coagulation system, the complement or fibrinolytic system.
